Come on IN!

After months of hard work and fine-tuning, the Youth-In portal is ready to welcome the thoughts, opinions and views of millions of young people from across the Caribbean and will be officially launched on October 31st, 2012.

MINISTER of Culture and Youth in Barbados, Hon. Stephen Lashley, will be among the speakers at the launch of the United Nations Development Programme Youth-IN portal, next Wednesday, at the UN headquarters in Hastings, Christ Church.

The portal (www.youth-in.com) and its affiliated Facebook page facebook.com/youthinnovation) are reflective of the overall Youth-IN vision, which promotes the social, cultural and political involvement of young Caribbean people and invites them to literally change the world.

In the lead up to the launch, and to maximise the reach and involvement of youth from across the region, UNDP Youth-IN will host a series of interactive internet discussions entitled "Are you in or are you out? Join Youth-IN!" These discussions will feature regional pioneers and prominent exponents of art, culture, media and politics and will be streamed live on both youth-in.com and its Facebook page.

The very first talk on Monday 29 October at 11:00am will certainly resonate with young Caribbean people. Entitled "Young People This, Young People That: what media says about youth?" the discussion will be led by two young media leaders – Vincentian Clare Keizer, the CEO" and Editor-in-Chief of the Searchlight Newspaper and St. Lucia's Clinton Reynolds, who is the president of the Media Association of St. Lucia.

The second talk on Monday 29 October at 3:00pm, asks the bold question "Is Caribbean Politics An Old Man's Game?" and features youthful politicians who have front row seats to regional politics – President of the Barbadian Senate, the Hon. Kerryann Ifill and Minister of State in the ministry of Tourism and Entertainment in Jamaica, Hon. Damion Crawford

The final panel discussion to launch the Youth-IN portal will be held on Tuesday 30 October at 3:00pm will feature Entertainment Entrepreneur and Creative Director of Island People in Trinidad – Marlon Grant and well as internationally renowned saxophonist Auturo Tappin on the topic: "Ain't No Business Like Show Business: The Life And Trials Of A Cultural Entrepreneur".

Young people around the region will have the opportunity to join in online, ask questions and share their views as the panellists tackle some hot button issues.

Dr. Paula Hidalgo-Sanchis, UNDP's Youth-IN project coordinator said the interactive discussions tied in perfectly with the project's mission.

"We're really excited about this because Youth-IN is all about young Caribbean people being involved, being invested and being interested in their society. So what better way to get young people engaged than to seek out their opinions on the issues that affect them? It's even more exciting since our panellists embody the Youth-IN ethos because they are already deeply involved in changing their communities and their industries."

Background
The UNDP's Project Youth Innovation aims to get young Caribbean people involved in their societies and to get their societies invest in them. The project evolved out of a 2010 CARICOM Youth Commission report: 'Eye on the Future: Investing in YOUTH NOW for Tomorrow's Community' which showed the challenges of Caribbean youth and the costs to Caribbean society of not investing in youth.

The multi-faceted project which is at work in 20 Caribbean countries, gives young people several platforms from which they can change the world in their own way. The project has five main 'corners' – arts and culture, volunteerism, the Youth-In Think Tank, entrepreneurship and participation. Each of these corners has several different projects under it that are intended to engage young Caribbean people in a variety of ways.
The website www.youth-in.com is a resource for young Caribbean people which has all of the information and news on the initiatives being pursued under the various corners and also highlights the accomplishments of positive Caribbean youth.

This is why showcases such as Destination Haitiare important. Destination Haiti will be an all-day event that will be showcasing Haiti’s culture, cuisine, music, and art. Crossing Borders is working to change this. 10,000 Toys For Haiti (TTT4H) is the Haitian arm of HCB, an initiative whose purpose is to raise awareness, funds and support where needed. 10,000 Toys For Haiti made its first trip to Haiti in 2010. Supporting Socially Responsible Brands

(Family Features) Beyond their bottom lines, a growing number of companies and brands are harnessing their products, services and resources to help make the world a better place.

?????????One way this is happening is through companies using their products as vehicles to address social problems. For instance, a shoe company matches each purchase with a shoe donation to a child in need. In another, an eyewear company provides eye exam training to men and women living in developing countries. These companies understand incorporating social good into business is increasingly becoming the coin of the realm for companies that want to succeed.

Social Responsibility Is Increasingly Essential

Doing well by doing good is not a new concept for business. Historically, social responsibility has been a fundamental key for many brands’ successes in the marketplace. Some of the largest global brands include good citizenship as part of their mission. Larger organizations have more opportunities to globalize these efforts, integrating them into core business functions.

A prime example is MetLife, a nearly 150 year-old company that was recently named by Chronicle of Philanthropy as the No. 1 philanthropic organization among U.S. life insurers. The insurance provider’s goal is to drive long-term financial stability for people and families around the world so they can pursue more from life. They educate and provide access to products in nearly 50 countries for almost 100 million people and support a broad range of programs that help make a positive impact on communities.

A History of Helping

MetLife’s efforts to make a positive impact on society are quite diverse. For example, in the 1930s MetLife Visiting Nurse Services provided treatment for 35 out of every 1,000 policyholders for illnesses such as diphtheria, influenza, smallpox and tuberculosis. The company also launched a program to aid thousands of out-of-work farmers during the depression, eventually putting them back in business and helping them pay off their debts.

Today, MetLife has expanded its corporate responsibility efforts to make a positive difference. Around the world the company is focused on providing financial knowledge and access to people, including those who have never had insurance before. Employees are in on the mission as well. The company has installed dozens of free electric car charging stations at all 14 of its U.S. owned and operated facilities, which has encouraged MetLife employees to drive electric and hybrid cars to reduce carbon emissions.

What the Future Holds

According to Nielsen Media Research, one-third of Millennials (33%) prefer to work for a sustainable company. Once these Millennials enter the work force, they can help infuse their mindsets into a company’s ethos. As this immersion intensifies, corporate America will advance socially, making a positive difference in people’s lives and the planet’s future. Companies looking to secure top talent will need to be even more innovative and far-reaching in these efforts, and the return on investment will impact several generations to come.
